Extemporaneous Speaking at NITOC 2019

Congratulation on being invited to compete in Extemp at the national tournament! This is a great achievement, and we want to set you up for success during your experience at NITOC 2019.
The Extemp Prep Room will be located on the main floor of the library (Collins Learning Center).

ALL Extemporaneous Competitors must attend the mandatory meeting on Monday, May 20 at 11:10 a.m. or 1:00 p.m. in the Extemp Prep Room located on the main floor of the library (Collins Learning Center). If you are in danger of missing lunch on Monday, have your parent or someone pick up a lunch for you so you can come to the meeting.

Set up time for your computer and/or Extemp file box:

Your computer must be set up and checked by the proctor before you can begin prep for the first round. Staff will be in the Extemp prep room to facilitate competitor set-up and computer check-in from 1:00 p.m. on Monday until the first speech round begins.

What you can expect from us:

Extemp speaker order, draw times, and speak times will be posted online at least 15 minutes prior to first draw. Additionally, check the Stoa push notifications for this information before each Extemp round. In the Extemp prep room, there will be a check-in and check-out process for the draw time. During prep time we will use the official clock to announce remaining prep time. In the competition room, there will be a large digital timepiece to time your speech. The timepiece will be operated by the head judge.

What we expect from you:

It is your responsibility to know your speaker position, your draw time, and your speak time. We expect you to use this information to manage your time appropriately. As a reminder, your speak time begins exactly thirty (30) minutes after your draw time. The judges will have a list of speak times, and they will expect you to begin your speech at the correct time for your speaker position.

Laptops and power cords:

Label everything with your name, club name, and phone number – laptops, files boxes, power cords, extension cords, etc. Please bring your own labeled extension cords and power strips if needed, because you may not have close access to an electrical outlet in the prep room. Please charge laptops where you are staying prior to arriving at the tournament each day rather than expect there to be a place to charge at the tournament. Please note that computers may not be shared between competitors unless written permission is provided to the Extemp proctor by the club coach. (See the Extemp rules for more information about how this works.)
